Desperate for a hit in 1964, an obscure band named the Kinks slashed up a cheap guitar amp with a razor blade. When the Kinks released "You Really Got Me" in their native England on August 4, 1964, it was a classic make-or-break moment. Ray Davies had composed "You Really Got Me" in the front room of his parents' house in Fortis Green, with help from his brother. They wanted the song to be the kind of showstopper that would make audiences dance and go wild, and set out to make it repetitive, "like an African tribal chant." And as we know history - their wish came true.Rob Turnover. Actually he is someone notorious but on the other hand (that is, after listening to this record) we will see him in a different pair of shoes and maybe a new haircut? Rob Turnover is the alter ego of legendary Jazz / Downbeat / D&B-Producer "Minus 8" from Switzerland, who returns to his musical roots such as Rock, Metal, Punk, Electro and reactivated them on this 7". The reactivation thing. By covering the Kinks `You really got me´ Rob Turnover did a real good job. He recorded everything new even more instuments and still kept the originals trashy atmosphere. The sound is much fresher and kicks ass, he added a little electronic flavor in the middle and invited Gwendolyn Rich to put her voice on the A-side-version and this is sexy as sex can be. Gwendolyn is a well-known Swiss model and actress with a classical-trained voice. Right now, she is "The Swiss Underground Star" who really got the tracks spirit. On the B-Side "U" aka Stefanie Keller, the singer of live project "Minus 8 Plus Band" gave the track the final frontier. She lived one year in Brazil, maybe that´s why she comes on so strong on this tune. This is Angora Steel...expect more Punk-stuff from Newcomer´s, Beat Kings and other Compost Super Stars like Minus 8! It´s sharp as a swiss army knife and goes down like good brasilian caipirinha. Real delicious! ROB TURNOVER "You Really Got Me" A1: You Really Got Me (feat. Gwendolyn Rich) B1: You Really Got Me (feat. U) ![]() ANGST 002-1 | vinyl 12"
You don't need to be beaten to unconsciousness 'till you understand that this new remix EP by Tigerbeat kicks ass. Charming, hip-rocking beauties Tigerbeat, who're normally unleashing their incurable sexiness on Buback Records, gracefully dedicated material from their latest album "13 Songs" for this remix mash-up. So now they're causing ructions on Angora Steel with this 12"... and they will beat some senses into you indeed, if only with their choice of raging remixers! At the very first take on "Beat Me 'Till I Understand" it´s all in the family. Ladomat Label mate Ascii.Disko not only brought this EP's cover collage to life but also contributed producing skills to Tigerbeat's last album "13 Songs". And when it comes to entertainment, the whole world is a stage for the congenial man-machine: remixes for Josh Wink and Cielo are an undeniable proof! You can tell playing after show sets for Björk hasn't spoiled disco punk kingpin Tommie Sunshine. After collaborations with Felix Da Housecat, Princess Superstar, remixes for The Stills, Scissor Sisters and even the king of Rock'n'Roll himself Elvis (in the end that one never made it for a commercial release, though), he's on to a new remix of Tigerbeat's "Looking Good" that sounds like... well, just imagine the Beach Boys gone even more psychedelic. If possible... On the flipside, it's Punx Soundcheck who get their share of the deal and this is not a hit of valium. Instead, Punx Soundcheck created a rolling special blast that consists of electro thunderstorm ghettoblaster Nightrider tribute stuff. Very smart and apart. Just like their other remixes for Atomizer (on Gigolo), Dead Or Alive and the original track they recorded with Marc Almond. Yes, they are eager to please and leave beaks hungrily open for more. Savas Pascalidis? Watch out son, he´s the CEO of Lasergun and established artist on Gigolo and Kurbel Records. Being among the most creative sound fuss-pots, Savas sneaked in, hijacked the track and pumped some pushing electro disco techhouse in it. Leaves you thirsty for more ..... Quotes on the 12": "I really like the quirkiness of this record, acid rock remake for me." Dark is the hour and here comes the imaginary soundtrack to your personal 80's horror movie!
And you can try to run. But you can't hide. This EP and also the new album by Martin Peter to be released on Angora Steel are about to cause you the sweetest nightmares you'll ever have. But Martin Peter is not alone. No, sitting under your beds and in your wardrobes only waiting to haunt you with this collection of truly beautiful pain are two more atomic brains. The first of them you can hear featuring on the delirium of "No Means Land" to which the A-Side of the EP is dedicated. This song pokes you in the eye with the needle that is the hypodermic voice of Munich-based Felix Neuenhoff. On the flipside, Martin Peter himself gives you the 80's synthesized death kiss with "Day In The Cafe". Being a successful DJ for years, Martin Peter knows how to move your bowels. And the harsh guitar riff is indeed creeping down your spine! The second guest-mastermind and re-animator for all cardiac morons on "Bypass" is no-one else but the infamous Alec Empire who received high acclaim and great sales globally for both Atari Teenage Riot and his solo projects. And just like the rest of the "Bypass" EP this stuff isn't angelic and it isn't made of harp sounds. Instead, by adding Alec Empire's distinctive flavour to this angst-ridden tune, "Bypass" becomes an aggressive explosion of raw punk and synthetic breaks. Quotes on the 12": "The combination of the stompy kick with simple distorted bass, the twisted synth randomness counterweighted by the haunting voice of Alex Empire (Atari Teenage Riot) - this all gets the hair up on my back. The drum pattern is so beautifully simple. I beat my head against the wall in the studio to achieve this affective simplicity and often get nowhere". 365 Mag Martin Peter "Bypass" A1: No Means Land (feat. Felix Neuenhoff) B1: Day In The Cafe (feat. Martin Peter) B2: Bypass (feat. Alec Empire) ![]() ANGST 004-1/-2 | LP/CD
What is the average 12 year-old kid doing in the middle of the 80s? Collecting Metal, Punk, Industrial and Wave records, visiting all the former legends in concert and trying not to be like a virgin… And what is this average kid called Martin Peter doing some years later when smilies and the TB-303 are increasingly contaminating the planet? Exactly, Martin forms a live-pa along with a friend under the name of FILTER, which results in a wild bunch of Acid, Breakz and Techno and he´s still listening to Hardcore, Indie, Metal, Punk and Crossover. And after improving his studio skills with his mechanical friends ATARI and AKAI, he starts to release on different labels (like 77Rec or Exun Rec) different styles of electronic music... and is still a Hardcore and Metal fan... Nowadays this former kid is the average thirty year-old Hardcore and Metal fan who was DJing the last decade at venues like Nature One, Loveparade, Street Parade, in many clubs like Watergate, Erste Liga, Flokati, Posthof Linz, Die Registratur etc, had releases on Compost-Records/ Exun-Rec/Anti-Pop/Devoted Tunes...BUT NOW...there´s one "very important" thing new on the list: This guy is using a guitar….but no fucking electroclash!!!!! Instead his new studio baby "Enough Of This?!" on the new division of Compost Angora Steel, is a home-recorded piece of Punk / Metal / Indie / with just enough electronica to kick ass in the new millennium. ENOUGH OF THESE? - WHO ELSE IS ON THE RECORD One of the guest-masterminds on "Enough Of This?!" is the notorious Alec Empire who contributed his vocals to "Bypass". After indulging in the world of Techno and Acidhouse during the late 80s, Alec found (and founded) together with friends Hanin Elias and Carl Crack a new platform for their concerns: Atari Teenage Riot, a band full of musical innovations and political ideologies. And of course, Atari Teenage Riot weren't afraid to spread it all around the globe. Their remarkable mixture of raw punk and synthetic breaks combined with strong political messages was received with much praise among critics and Atari Teenage Riot started touring with the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Wu-Tang Clan or Beck. But Alec Empire didn't confine himself to getting tanned under the spot lights of the world's stages, no, he's also been very active behind the scenes and added his distinctive flavour to remixes of Einstürzende Neubauten, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore or Icelandic princess Björk. In 1994, Alec gave forward-looking music a new home on his new label Digital Hardcore Recordings and last but not least the hardcore adonis even managed to rise to popstardom in Japan during the last years. Reason enough to lead Martin Peter up the stairway to digital recording heaven as well! Another collaborator on "Enough Of This?!" with lots of experience in the field of musical paranoia is UK-based Mark Stewart. After rising to fame with 70's genre busting punk-funk-avantgarde combo The Pop Group, Mark decided to leave the dim surroundings of his hometown Bristol and headed off to London... the perfect place to start experimenting with brain-pulverising sounds. So 1982 saw the foundation of Mark and the Maffia and they surely didn't need to convince the audience of their über-productions by applying Maffia methods like extortionate robbery! At the same time Mark was drawn into the ON-U Sound conspiracy around Adrian Sherwood and his legendary dub armada. In more recent times Mark has also become a mentor of Tricky and he's been active ever since producing a decent amount of albums with the versatility and eccentricity he's so well known for. Munich-based Felix Neuenhoff had it coming for quite a while. Being long-term friends with Martin Peter, it was all too clear that Felix was the one to contribute most of the vocals on "Enough Of This?!". And if you're suffering from a wave-punk overdose, Felix is even the right person to give you the antidote in the form of the sweetest Robbie Williams cover songs you've ever heard! Cuddling with Martin Peter on "Biker" is Lady Diskette. As one fifth of snotty riot girl (plus one man) band Hellfire, Diskette knows how to 'fuck the shit' (as you can also hear on their latest album on Hausmusik) ... and she's not afraid to take you down this blessed road to hell as well... Quotes on the album: "Electro Pogo shit, bloody fun for everyone" "If the drums aren't screaming "We're The Road Crew", I wish I've never been a teenager." "The New Wave Of Disco Metal?" SPEX >>> Peter´s attempt to combine dance and hardcore is fairly compelling...and flashes a little flair at the same time XL8R >>> "Munichs kudos rises up internationally...thanks to Martin Peter." Miauuuu....riding the pipeline of Colombian snowLike he proved before on the first Angora Steel release "You really got me" Rob Turnover, the alter ego of legendary Jazz / Downbeat / D&B-Producer "Minus 8" from Switzerland, has disco punk in his bones.... Returning to Turnover's musical roots such as Rock, Metal, Punk, Electro this 12" will rock the floor big time. Two different versions of "Jimmy The Cat" with catchy basslines and oldschool synthie-sounds featuring bad boy Jo Nasty make you smile and groove at the same time...try it out Also on the flipside you find "Recht Schlecht" mixing electro, disco and punk with a little bit of "Yello" (Hihihi also swiss cheese) spice - turn up the volume and see what happens...nice one! Quotes on the 12": "Great underground Discopunk with a nice bassline...love the unoriginal version for the funny synthie...definitely a play...!" We never stop rockin'!Martin Peter`s album "Enough Of This?!" on ANGORA STEEL has been a brill piece of "Electro Pogo shit which was bloody fun for everyone" (Spex) ever since its release. The "Electro-Overkill" (Schallplattenmann) will carry on with some amazing remixes of the track 'Psychoville" feat. Mark Stewart. The first track was treated by the upcoming duo Digitalism. Already known for their pogo-orientated dj sets, their first single "Idealistic" on KITSUNÉ made quite a buzz and has been kicked by DJs like Kid Alex, Moonbootica, Martini Brös or Boris Dlugosch. Here they go again with a rocking remix of "Psychoville". You also should look out for their remixes for Munk "Disco Clown"(Gomma) and Sono "A New Cage" (Pias). After his debut "Dual" and 12inches "Plastik Passion" (with legendary John Tejada Remix), "Universal Unit", "Protection" (with Michi Lange re-edit), and his latest 12" "Transmission" Ben Mono will release his second album on COMPOST this autumn. With his famous remix of Gabriel Ananda's "Süßholz" on the Future Sounds Of Jazz vol. 10 compilation he already showcased his remixing talent. Now he's sweetening summer time with this soulful remix, meliorating "Psychoville" with his typical Ben Mono sound which became his trademark whilst celebrating the spirit of electro. The final track is delivered by Munich's underground celebrity DJ Mooner. Whilst busy with his own label "ERKRANKUNG DURCH MUSIQUE" and his famous wack party series "ZOMBO COMBO", he still found time to remix "Psychoville" in his very own and off-the-hook tremendous manner. Fruity bazooty. Quotes on the 12": "Good Stuff!" Hell >>> "Oohh the Digitalism Mix is very cool." Ian Pooley >>> "Phat!" Mousse T. >>> "Psychoville Digitalism rmx is mad. I think that gonna be a hit for sure in the kitsuné dj box,a bit like if LCD and Soulwax were doing music together." Gildas & Masaya / Kitsuné >>> "I don´t know - but I love it. Throw together rock drums, acid fx, and an absolutely awesome funk guitar riff and a disco-tastic bass, pepper with abstract vocals." Coburn / Discoid Mag >>> "`Psychoville` is everywhere!" Tocadisco >>> "The Digitalism remix of Martin Peter is fantastic! The combination of the live elements with the tough electronics is done very very well and is perfect for my sets...I love the track they did on Kitsune as well, so I'm looking forward to hearing more from them...The Ben Mono mix is pretty good as well..." Drinks and drugs, noise, sickness… welcome to The Crack Whore Society! Descending from the Punk and Hardcore scene of the early 90s the mission of this Berlin based band can now clearly be defined as ADDICTIVE ROCK MUSIC! The guys around Frontsau Patrick Schauer have just finished the recording sessions of their self-titled debut album which will be released on Angora Steel in late Summer 2007. The outcome are 14 songs in only 35 minutes - fast, hard, on point! The raw production was done by T.Raumschmiere (Shitkatapult/Mute) who left his monstertruck in the parking lot to get into the driver's seat behind the Crack Whore boards. The final touch was contributed by Christian Vogel (another former techno legend and part of Super Collider alongside Jamie Lidell) who is responsible for the mastering of the sound. The band itself consists of Mario Bender (guitare), Kai Mohr (guitare) and Marco Haas (drums). For live performances they get support from the experienced master of low frequencys Andreas Paruschke (member of the T.Raumschmiere Band). Sticking together they spit out such an extreme tight wall of sound making ferroconcrete look like candyfloss. SICK AS FUCK, TWICE AS HARD! This should make fans The Bronx, Smokeblow or Beatsteaks feel comfortable… "Lowrider" is the advance single to the album and features an exclusive Motor remix on the b-side. The 7" is printed on white vinyl and is stricktly limited to 666 handnumbered copies - collectors item!!!
